Body Size Assessment

Body size assessment is the measurement and interpretation of physical dimensions and body composition to characterize health, growth, and disease risk. In clinical medicine, practitioners combine measures such as height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and, when available, body-fat estimates; body mass index is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. These measurements support nutritional evaluation, pediatric growth monitoring, obesity assessment, medication dosing, and identification of changes associated with chronic disease. Because individual measures can be influenced by age, sex, muscle mass, and fluid status, clinicians interpret them alongside medical history, physical examination, and other diagnostic findings.

Experimental Manipulation of Body Size to Estimate Morphological Scaling Relationships in Drosophila

2011

Morphological scaling relationships capture and describe organismal shape. We present a method to measure morphological scaling relationships across the natural range of body sizes in fully metamorphic insects. Using a simple diet manipulation we increase the distribution of trait sizes, permitting the accurate description of how shape and size co-vary.

Assessing Body Temperature - Rectal

2025

Rectal temperature measurement is considered the most precise method for assessing core body temperature and typically registers higher than oral temperature. For adults, the rectal thermometer should be inserted 1 to 1.5 inches into the rectum to obtain the most accurate reading. Follow these steps for rectal temperature assessment: Step 1: Perform hand hygiene and don clean gloves to prevent cross-infection. Step 2: Position the patient in a side-lying position to better visualize the rectal...

Using RNA-mediated Interference Feeding Strategy to Screen for Genes Involved in Body Size Regulation in the Nematode C. elegans

We demonstrate how to use the RNAi feeding technique to knock down target genes and score body size phenotype in C. elegans. This method could be used for a large scale screen to identify potential genetic components of interest, such as those involved in body size regulation by DBL-1/TGF-β signaling.

Deriving Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) from Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) Cells by Different Sizes of Embryoid Bodies

The objective of this report is to describe the protocols to derive the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells using different sizes of embryoid bodies.

Assessing Body Temperature - Oral

Here are the steps to accurately measure oral temperature using an electronic thermometer: Step 1: Start by practicing proper hand hygiene to prevent the spread of microorganisms. Step 2: Take the thermometer out of the charging unit, switch it on, and wait for the ready sign. Step 3: Gently slide the probe cover until a click is heard. This simple action prevents cross-contamination and ensures the correct placement of the probe cover. Step 4: Instruct the patient to open their mouth and place...
