Cardiac Gating

Cardiac gating is a technique that synchronizes medical imaging or physiological data acquisition with specific phases of the cardiac cycle, reducing motion-related distortion and improving diagnostic accuracy. An electrocardiogram, typically using the R-wave as a timing reference, triggers image capture prospectively or assigns acquired data retrospectively to systole or diastole. In computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear cardiology, this approach supports clearer visualization of coronary arteries, cardiac chambers, valves, and myocardial motion. By linking anatomy with heart function, cardiac gating improves assessment of ventricular performance, perfusion, and structural disease while helping clinicians plan treatment and monitor progression.

Ligand-Gated Ion Channel Receptor: Gating Mechanism

2023

Ligand-gated ion channels are transmembrane proteins that play a vital role in intercellular communication and functions of the nervous system. They allow the influx of ions across the membrane once the neurotransmitter binds, allowing the subsequent transmission of electrical excitation across the neurons. Other ligand-gated ion channels, like the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor, permit anions like chloride into the cells on the binding of the GABA molecule. Their entry into the cell...

Underflow Gates

Underflow gates are vital for controlling water flow in irrigation canals. The three main types of underflow gates — vertical, radial, and drum gates — serve different purposes while ensuring effective flow management. Vertical gates move up and down, generating a free-flowing water jet; radial gates pivot to regulate the flow; and drum gates rotate for precise adjustments. The flow through these gates is influenced by downstream conditions, resulting in free or drowned outflow.Free and Drowned...

Source: Frederick W. Damen and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana In this video, high field, small-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with physiological monitoring is demonstrated to acquire gated cine loops of the murine cardiovascular system. This procedure provides a basis for assessing left-ventricular function, visualizing vascular networks, and quantifying motion of organs due to respiration. Comparable small animal...
