Generalized Linear Regression

Generalized linear regression is a statistical framework that relates predictors to an outcome while accommodating response data that are not normally distributed, making it useful for many medical research questions. It combines a linear predictor with a link function that connects expected outcome values to predictors and permits outcome distributions such as binomial for binary responses or Poisson for counts. Researchers can use logistic regression to estimate disease odds, identify associations with clinical or biological factors, and adjust for confounding variables. These models support analysis of diagnostic results, treatment outcomes, and population health data, helping quantify uncertainty and improve evidence-based decision making.

Regression Toward the Mean

2020

Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when researchers try to extrapolate results...

Linearization of the Bradford Protein Assay

The accuracy and sensitivity of protein determination by the rapid and convenient Bradford assay is compromised by intrinsic nonlinearity. We show a simple linearization procedure that greatly increases the accuracy, improves the sensitivity of the assay about 10-fold, and significantly reduces interference by detergents.

Generalized Hooke's Law

2025

The generalized Hooke's Law is a broadened version of Hooke's Law, which extends to all types of stress and in every direction. Consider an isotropic material shaped into a cube subjected to multiaxial loading. In this scenario, normal stresses are exerted along the three coordinate axes. As a result of these stresses, the cubic shape deforms into a rectangular parallelepiped. Despite this deformation, the new shape maintains equal sides, and there is a normal strain in the direction of the...

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

2025

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily functioning. Unlike situational anxiety, which arises in response to specific stressors, GAD often occurs without a clear cause. Individuals may experience disproportionate worry about work, health, or relationships. For instance, a person might continuously fear poor health despite normal medical evaluations or...

Generalization, Discrimination, and Extinction

2024

Generalization, discrimination, and extinction are key concepts in operant conditioning that influence how behaviors are learned and maintained. Generalization occurs when a behavior reinforced in one context is performed in similar situations. For instance, a student who studies diligently for calculus and receives excellent grades might apply the same study habits to psychology and history, expecting similar results. Generalization shows how learning in one setting can influence behavior in...
