Glucose Stimulation Response

Glucose stimulation response is the physiological and experimental reaction to elevated glucose, particularly the ability of pancreatic beta cells to detect glucose and release insulin. As glucose enters beta cells, its metabolism raises the ATP-to-ADP ratio, closing ATP-sensitive potassium channels; membrane depolarization then opens voltage-gated calcium channels, and calcium influx triggers insulin secretion. Measuring this response through glucose challenges or glucose-stimulated insulin secretion assays helps assess beta-cell function, insulin regulation, and metabolic health. In medicine, these evaluations support diabetes research, investigation of impaired glucose control, and development of therapies that preserve or restore insulin production.

Source: Kuhn, Y. et al. Intracortical Inhibition Within the Primary Motor Cortex Can Be Modulated by Changing the Focus of Attention. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to modulate motor neuron activity and measure muscle responses via electromyography (EMG). It outlines the steps for locating the motor hotspot, determining stimulation thresholds, and assessing the effects of subthreshold TMS (subTMS) on cortical inhibition.

Assessing Glucose Uptake in the Motor Neurons of Drosophila Larvae with Upregulated Glucose Metabolism

2025

The video demonstrates a technique for measuring glucose uptake in Drosophila larval motor neurons using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based intracellular glucose sensor. After dissecting the larvae to expose the ventral nerve cord, the motor neurons are visualized through the fluorescence emitted by the sensor's donor fluorophore. When stimulated with glucose, FRET between the sensor's donor and acceptor fluorophores triggers the emission of fluorescence from the acceptor,...
