Hdl Acceptors

HDL acceptors are high-density lipoprotein particles and apolipoprotein A-I complexes that receive excess cholesterol and phospholipids from cells, a function central to lipid homeostasis and cardiovascular research. They promote cholesterol efflux when cellular transporters such as ABCA1 and ABCG1 transfer lipids to HDL, while lecithin–cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) converts free cholesterol into cholesteryl esters that move into the lipoprotein core. In medicine, measuring HDL acceptor capacity helps assess reverse cholesterol transport and cardiovascular risk beyond HDL concentration alone. These assays also support studies of lipid metabolism, atherosclerosis, and therapies designed to improve cholesterol clearance.

The synthesis of fluorine-18 (18F) labeled radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography typically requires months of experience. When incorporated into a radiotracer, the silicon-fluoride acceptor (SiFA) motif enables a simple 18F-labeling protocol that is independent of costly equipment and preparatory training, while reducing precursor quantity needed and utilizing milder reaction conditions.
