Hernia Defect Closure

Hernia Defect Closure is a surgical repair method that restores the continuity and strength of weakened abdominal wall tissue through which organs or peritoneal contents may protrude. During the procedure, surgeons reduce the herniated contents when necessary and approximate the defect margins with sutures, often reinforcing the repair with prosthetic mesh to distribute tension and support healing. This technique is central to treating inguinal, ventral, incisional, and other hernias, with the chosen approach influenced by defect size, location, tissue quality, and patient factors. Successful closure aims to relieve symptoms, prevent incarceration or recurrence, and restore abdominal wall function, while understanding tissue mechanics and surgical principles helps guide safer reconstruction and improve outcomes.

This manuscript describes methods associated with creation and repair of a ventral abdominal wall defect (hernia). This model can be used to study repair strategies such as those that use implanted materials. In this manuscript, repair of the experimental hernia with porcine small intestinal submucosa is presented as an example.

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia is the abnormal protrusion of the stomach or other abdominal organs through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm into the thoracic cavity.Normally, the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) lies below the diaphragm and is supported by the phrenoesophageal membrane, the diaphragmatic crura, and connective tissues. Weakening of these structures—due to aging, congenital defects like a short esophagus, or increased intra-abdominal pressure from coughing, obesity, pregnancy, or heavy...
