Inflammation Assessment

Inflammation assessment is the systematic evaluation of immune activity and tissue responses that help identify, characterize, and monitor inflammation in the body. Clinicians combine symptoms and physical findings, such as pain, swelling, warmth, and fever, with laboratory measures including C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, leukocyte counts, and disease-specific biomarkers; these reflect processes driven by immune-cell activation and inflammatory mediators. In medicine, assessment supports the diagnosis and monitoring of infections, autoimmune disorders, tissue injury, and chronic inflammatory disease. Interpreting results alongside clinical context can guide treatment decisions, evaluate response to therapy, and distinguish persistent inflammation from short-term protective responses.

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique to assess a test antigen by inducing skin inflammation in a murine model. The test antigen—a hapten in an oil/acetone solution—is topically applied to the skin of the mouse ear, and inflammation of the skin is assessed after an adequate period.

Using Fluorescence-Mediated Tomography to Assess Murine Intestinal Inflammation

This video demonstrates a technique for assessing intestinal macrophage infiltration in a murine model of colitis using fluorescence-mediated tomography (FMT). Upon inducing colitis in a mouse via dextran sodium sulfate (DSS), the animal is injected with antibodies that recognize the F4/80 glycoprotein marker on infiltrated macrophages in the colon. The mouse is then imaged in an FMT device where the fluorescence and reflectance signals are reconstructed into a three-dimensional image to...

Overview In response to tissue injury and infection, mast cells initiate inflammation. Mast cells release chemicals that increase the permeability of adjacent blood capillaries and attract additional immune cells to the wound or site of infection. Neutrophils are phagocytic leukocytes that exit the bloodstream and engulf invading microbes. Blood clotting platelets seal the wound and fibers create a scaffold for wound healing. Macrophages engulf aging neutrophils to end the acute inflammatory...

Experimental models of inflammatory bowel disease have allowed us to examine the complex innate and adaptive immune responses associated with pathogenesis. Using histological scoring, quantification of pro-inflammatory cytokines and myeloperoxidase activity, one can begin to assess these responses seen in inflammatory bowel disease.
