Remote Ischemic Conditioning

Remote ischemic conditioning is a noninvasive medical technique that uses brief, controlled episodes of reduced blood flow in a limb to trigger protection in distant tissues and organs. Typically, an inflatable cuff repeatedly restricts and restores limb circulation, activating neural, humoral, and vascular signals that can influence inflammatory responses, endothelial function, and cellular tolerance to ischemia-reperfusion injury. In medicine, researchers have investigated the approach alongside treatment for myocardial infarction, stroke, organ transplantation, and major surgery. Although clinical benefits vary by condition and protocol, remote ischemic conditioning offers a practical model for studying systemic tissue protection and developing supportive therapies.

The electroretinogram (ERG) is an electrical potential generated by the retina in response to light. This paper describes how to use the ERG to assess retinal function, in dark-adapted rats, and how it can be can be used to assess a neuroprotective intervention, in the present case remote ischemic preconditioning.

Ischemic stroke is a complex event in which the specific contribution of astrocytes to the affected brain region exposed to oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) is difficult to study. This article introduces a methodology to obtain isolated astrocytes and study their reactivity and proliferation under OGD conditions.

Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIP) is a method of conditioning tissues against damaging stress. We have established a method of remote ischemia at the hind limb, by inflating a sphygmomanometer cuff for 5-10 min. The neuroprotective capabilities of RIP have been demonstrated in a model of retinal degeneration in rodents.

Here, we present a protocol to measure, with high spatial resolution, the unsteady surface pressure in turbulent flows. This method demonstrates the construction of a remote microphone probe (RMP) and the determination of its frequency-dependent, complex transfer function. An analytical determination of the dynamic response is presented and validated.
