Surfactant Therapy

Surfactant therapy is a medical treatment that replaces or supplements pulmonary surfactant, a lipid- and protein-rich substance that keeps the alveoli open and supports efficient gas exchange. When delivered directly into the trachea, exogenous surfactant spreads across the alveolar surface, lowers surface tension, and reduces alveolar collapse during exhalation. Clinicians use this therapy primarily for premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome caused by insufficient surfactant production, often alongside respiratory support and careful oxygen management. By improving lung compliance and ventilation, surfactant therapy can reduce breathing difficulty and complications associated with neonatal respiratory failure, while ongoing research examines its role in other forms of acute lung injury.

Lavage-induced Surfactant Depletion in Pigs As a Model of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

2016

Repeated pulmonary lavages in anesthetized pigs induce lung injury resembling major aspects of human acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For this purpose the lungs are repeatedly lavaged with 0.9% saline at 37 °C. The goal of the protocol is a reproducible mitigation of gas exchange and hemodynamics for research in ARDS.

Experimental Measurement of Settling Velocity of Spherical Particles in Unconfined and Confined Surfactant-based Shear Thinning Viscoelastic Fluids

This paper demonstrates the experimental procedure to measure terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and settling velocities are measured for a range of particle sizes in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls.

2025

Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...
