Neurobiological Applications

Neurobiological applications are the use of knowledge about the nervous system, from molecular signaling and neural circuits to behavior, to address questions in health, disease, and technology. They rely on examining how neurons communicate through electrical activity and chemical synapses, how networks process information, and how changes in cells or circuits alter function. In neuroscience, these applications support the study of neurological and psychiatric disorders, guide the development and evaluation of drugs and other interventions, and inform tools such as brain imaging and neural interfaces. By linking biological mechanisms with measurable behavior and clinical outcomes, neurobiological research helps translate basic discoveries into improved diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

An Introduction to Developmental Neurobiology

2023

Developmental neuroscience is a field that explores how the nervous system is formed, from early embryonic stages through adulthood. Although it is known that neural progenitor cells follow predictable stages of proliferation, differentiation, migration, and maturation, the mechanisms controlling the progression through each stage are incompletely understood. Studying development is not only important for understanding how complex structures are assembled, but also for characterizing and...

2011

The comparative species approach allows behavioral neuroscientists to explore various neurobiological factors associated with specific behaviors viewed as characteristic of a specific animal model. Taking advantage of naturally occurring differences in behavior between closely related species, this technique doesn’t require invasive techniques to manipulate the expression of the behavior.

Using the Activity-based Anorexia Rodent Model to Study the Neurobiological Basis of Anorexia Nervosa

2015

Here we present a protocol to induce activity-based anorexia (ABA) in female adolescent mice. ABA is a condition of hyperactivity evoked by imposing food restriction on rodents with access to a running wheel. This phenomenon is being used as a model to study the underlying neurobiology of anorexia nervosa.

Zebrafish Brain Dissection: A Technique of Fish Neurobiology

2023

This video describes the technique of microdissection of the brain from an adult zebrafish. This method helps in obtaining whole brain derived neuorospheres that can be studied further.

Drosophila Adult Brain Dissection: A Method in Fly Neurobiology

2023

This video describes how to dissect and isolate the adult Drosophila brain–a procedure necessary for visualizing the organ, which is otherwise obscured by the cuticle, eye, and tracheal tissue. The example protocol shows a detailed demonstration yielding high-quality preparations that can be used for immunostaining and imaging methods in Drosophila neurobiology.
