Pgp9.5 Nerve Marker

Pgp9.5 nerve marker is an immunohistochemical marker used to identify neurons and nerve fibers in central and peripheral nervous tissues. It recognizes ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1), a deubiquitinating enzyme that is highly abundant in neuronal cytoplasm and helps regulate protein turnover through the ubiquitin system. Antibodies against Pgp9.5 bind this protein, allowing researchers to visualize neuronal structures in tissue sections using chromogenic or fluorescent detection. In neuroscience, Pgp9.5 staining supports the study of nerve distribution, neural development, peripheral neuropathy, tumor innervation, and neurodegenerative disease, although interpretation should consider tissue context and the marker’s expression in some non-neuronal cells.

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.

This abstract describes a novel method to assess the development of neurotoxicity in patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. While conventional assessment methods are limited in their ability to detect early changes in nerve function, nerve excitability techniques provide early identification of patients at risk of severe neurotoxicity and insight into pathophysiology.

Construction of a Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface in a Rat Model of Nerve Injury

Source: Svientek, S. R., et al. Fabrication of the Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (C-RPNI) in the Adult Rat. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the surgical construction of a composite regenerative peripheral nerve interface (C-RPNI) in a rat model of peripheral nerve injury. The procedure involves attaching a transected peroneal nerve to a muscle graft and overlaying it with a dermal skin graft to promote nerve regeneration. Over time, motor and sensory neurons...
