Post-weaning Induction

Post-weaning induction is the deliberate initiation of an experimental or genetic manipulation after young animals transition from maternal care to independent feeding, allowing researchers to separate developmental effects from those arising later in life. In inducible neuroscience models, researchers administer an inducer after weaning to activate a conditional genetic system, producing targeted changes in selected cells or pathways at a defined time. This timing helps investigate how neural circuits, genes, or behaviors develop and function beyond early postnatal stages, while improving experimental control over when manipulation begins. Post-weaning induction therefore supports studies of brain maturation, disease mechanisms, circuit function, and behavior.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Millions of mice and rats are bred for use in biomedical research each year. Worldwide, there are several large commercial breeding facilities that supply mice to research laboratories, but many facilities also choose to breed mice and rats in-house to reduce costs and increase research options. When breeding in the animal facility, researchers are able to manipulate the genetics of the...

Inspiratory Muscle Training as an Adjunct to the Treatment of Weaning Failure in Critically Ill Patients: A Practical Guide

2026

Respiratory muscle weakness is highly prevalent in patients weaning from mechanical ventilation. Resistive inspiratory muscle training (IMT) can improve inspiratory strength and potentially weaning outcomes. This protocol provides a structured approach to offer IMT to selected patients based on the best available knowledge, facilitating its wider application in critical care.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use inductive coils to demonstrate the concept of inductor and inductance. Magnetic induction will be demonstrated using a rod magnet inserted into or extracted away from the core of a coil to induce a transient electromotive force (emf) voltage in the coil, measured by a voltmeter. This experiment will also demonstrate the mutual inductance between...

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville It might be possible for the human brain to keep track of each individual person, place, or thing encountered, but that would be a very inefficient use of time and cognitive resources. Instead, humans develop categories. Categories are mental representations of real things that can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, individuals can use the perceptual features of animals to place them into a given...
