Visual Stimulation Paradigm

A visual stimulation paradigm is a controlled experimental design that presents precisely defined images, patterns, or changes in brightness to investigate how the brain processes visual information. By varying stimulus features such as contrast, color, spatial frequency, motion, timing, or presentation order, researchers can evoke and isolate neural responses while measuring activity with methods including electroencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, or single-neuron recordings. These paradigms help link visual input to activity in sensory and higher-order brain regions, clarify mechanisms of perception and attention, and assess how neural processing changes across development, disease, or experimental conditions. Standardized designs also support reliable comparisons between studies and participants.

Spinal cord injury is a traumatic medical condition that may result in elevated risks of chronic secondary metabolic disorders. Here, we presented a protocol using surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation-resistance training in conjunction with functional electrical stimulation-lower extremities cycling as a strategy to ameliorate several of these medical problems.

Creating the Minimal Group Paradigm

2023

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University The study of intergroup relations, such as prejudice, conflict, and discrimination, has always been a central topic in social psychology. Does discrimination stem from competition with other groups, a history of conflict, or derogatory stereotypes? Despite an abundance of real-world examples, the ingredients that lead to intergroup discrimination are often unclear. To help solve this problem, a group of psychologists created "minimal...

Extracting Visual Evoked Potentials from EEG Data Recorded During fMRI-guided Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

2014

This paper describes a method for collecting and analyzing electroencephalography (EEG) data during concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) guided by activations revealed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A method for TMS artifact removal and extraction of event related potentials is described as well as considerations in paradigm design and experimental setup.
