Liver Disease

Liver disease refers to a broad group of conditions that impair the liver’s ability to regulate metabolism, detoxify substances, produce proteins, and process medications, making it an important focus in pharmacology. Injury from infection, toxins, metabolic disorders, or immune activity can trigger inflammation, hepatocyte damage, fibrosis, and, in advanced cases, cirrhosis that disrupts hepatic function and blood flow. Pharmacological research examines how drugs prevent or treat liver injury, how impaired metabolism changes drug exposure, and how dose selection can reduce toxicity. These principles support safer therapies for conditions such as viral hepatitis, cholestatic disease, and liver-related complications while guiding development of new treatments.

Mouse model of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) with metabolic dysfunction, hepatic gene expression changes, and liver histopathological alterations that resemble human MASLD, including fibrosis that progresses to advanced fibrosis stage 3. This model can be used in studies of MASLD pathophysiology and in pre-clinical studies of new therapies.

Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease. Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not related to...
