Decimal Places

Decimal places indicate the digits positioned to the right of a decimal point, allowing quantities to be expressed with a chosen level of precision. In physics, measurements are recorded by resolving a value into units, tenths, hundredths, and smaller subdivisions, while the final reported digit reflects the instrument’s measurement limit and uncertainty. Appropriate use of decimal places helps communicate significant figures, support consistent calculations, and prevent results from implying greater accuracy than the experiment can provide. They are essential when reporting length, time, mass, temperature, and derived quantities, where rounding rules and uncertainty analysis influence how experimental data are interpreted and compared.

Uncertainty in Measurement: Significant Figures

2020

All the digits in a measurement, including the uncertain last digit, are called significant figures or significant digits. Note that zero may be a measured value; for example, if a scale that shows weight to the nearest pound reads “140,” then the 1 (hundreds), 4 (tens), and 0 (ones) are all significant (measured) values. A measurement result is properly reported when its significant digits accurately represent the certainty of the measurement process. Below are a set of rules to determine the...

Two-Dimensional Graphs Some chemistry experiments take the form of directly changing one property of the system that you are studying otherwise known as the independent variable, like temperature, and measuring the effects on another property, otherwise known as the dependent variable, like volume. Once the data have been collected, the interaction between the two parameters must be quantified — or converted into a form that can be evaluated — and compared to other relationships.

2014

Cerebral perfusion is maintained across a range of pressures via cerebral autoregulation. However, characterizing autoregulation requires prominent pressure fluctuations at regulated frequencies. The described protocol will show how oscillatory lower body negative pressure can generate pressure fluctuations to provide data for projection pursuit regression for quantification of the autoregulatory curve.

Introducing an Angle Adjustable Cutting Box for Analyzing Slice Shear Force in Meat

Slice shear force is a reference method for beef texture analysis. Using an angle adjustable cutting box could increase its accuracy for research purposes. The results from different locations within the longissimus muscle show a high correlation with Warner-Bratzler shear force methodology and high potential adaptability for different muscles.
