Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior within an intimate or family relationship that harms, intimidates, or controls another person, making it an important topic in psychology and public health. It may involve physical, sexual, emotional, or economic abuse, as well as coercive control, in which threats, isolation, monitoring, or restrictions on resources limit a person’s autonomy and increase dependence. Psychological research examines how these patterns affect trauma, stress, mental health, development, and help-seeking across the lifespan. This knowledge supports risk assessment, trauma-informed services, prevention programs, and interventions that promote safety, recovery, and accountability.
