Harold Kelley

Harold Kelley was an American social psychologist whose theories of attribution explain how people infer the causes of behavior, making his work central to research on social perception and interpersonal judgment. His covariation model proposes that observers assess consensus, distinctiveness, and consistency across people, situations, and time to decide whether behavior reflects an internal disposition or an external circumstance. Kelley’s framework has shaped studies of causal reasoning, impression formation, motivation, and attributional bias, including errors that arise when people overemphasize personal characteristics or overlook situational factors. It remains influential in understanding how individuals interpret everyday social events and relationships.

Theory of Attribution II: Kelley's Covariation Theory

2025

Attribution theory plays a crucial role in social psychology, helping to explain how individuals interpret the causes of behavior. One prominent model within this field is Harold Kelley's covariation theory, which provides a systematic approach to determining whether internal traits or external circumstances drive a person's actions. The model posits that individuals rely on three key types of information—consensus, consistency, and distinctiveness—to make these judgments.Consensus: Comparing...
