Nonsense Object Stimuli

Nonsense object stimuli are unfamiliar, often computer-generated objects designed for psychological research without the meanings or experiences associated with familiar items. By controlling visual properties such as shape, color, texture, and part arrangement, researchers can isolate how perception, attention, memory, and categorization respond to novel forms; participants may learn to classify or associate these objects with specific categories through repeated exposure or feedback. This controlled approach helps distinguish effects of basic visual processing from prior knowledge and language, supporting research on concept learning, object recognition, cognitive development, and the neural mechanisms underlying categorization.

Nonsense-mediated mRNA Decay

2020

The Upf proteins that carry out nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) are found in all eukaryotic organisms, including humans. Each protein has an individual role, but they need to work in collaboration. Upf1 is an ATP-dependent RNA helicase that unwinds the RNA helix. Because Upf1 can unwind any RNA, Upf2 and Upf3 are required to help Upf1 discriminate between nonsense and normal mRNAs. Usually, Upf3 binds to an Exon Junction Complex (EJC) at mRNA splice sites. If a ribosome fully translates the mRNA,...

Applying Incongruent Visual-Tactile Stimuli during Object Transfer with Vibro-Tactile Feedback

2019

We present a protocol to apply incongruent visual-tactile stimuli during an object transfer task. Specifically, during block transfers, performed while the hand is hidden, a virtual presentation of the block shows random occurrences of false block drops. The protocol also describes adding vibrotactile feedback while performing the motor task.

Object Substitution Masking

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual masking is a term used by perceptual scientists to refer to a wide range of phenomena in which in an image is presented but not perceived by an observer because of the presentation of a second image. There are several different kinds of masking, many of them relatively intuitive and unsurprising. But one surprising and important type of masking is called Object Substitution Masking. It has been a focus of research in vision...

Creating Objects and Object Categories for Studying Perception and Perceptual Learning

2012

We describe a novel methodology for creating naturalistic 3-D objects and object categories with precisely defined feature variations. We use simulations of the biological processes of morphogenesis and phylogenesis to create novel, naturalistic virtual 3-D objects and object categories that can then be rendered as visual images or haptic objects.
