Question 1

What is habituation and why do researchers use it to study infants?

Accepted Answer

Habituation is the process where infants become accustomed to repeated stimuli and pay less attention to them over time. Researchers use habituation as a tool because infants cannot reliably speak or control their movements, making traditional testing impossible. By measuring changes in looking time, scientists can infer what infants notice and understand about their environment.

Question 2

How does dishabituation help researchers understand infant cognition?

Accepted Answer

Dishabituation is the reengagement of attention when something new appears after habituation. When infants show increased looking time to a novel stimulus, it indicates they detected the change and can discriminate between stimuli. This response reveals what infants perceive and learn, allowing researchers to study shape discrimination, facial recognition, and other cognitive abilities through measuring infants' rational imitation of actions.

Question 3

What is the dependent variable measured in an infant habituation experiment?

Accepted Answer

The dependent variable is looking time—the duration infants spend gazing at a stimulus. Researchers record looking times across trials, averaging the first three trials as baseline. Habituation is reached when looking time decreases to 50% or less of baseline for three consecutive trials, indicating the infant has become accustomed to the stimulus.

Question 4

Why is a within-subjects design used in infant habituation studies?

Accepted Answer

A within-subjects design exposes each infant to both familiar and novel stimuli, allowing researchers to compare responses within the same participant. This design controls for individual differences in attention and looking preferences. By presenting the familiar shape and novel shape to each infant, researchers can directly measure whether dishabituation occurs when a change is introduced.

Question 5

What role does the attention-getter play in habituation experiments?

Accepted Answer

The attention-getter is an animated, sound-producing image displayed before each stimulus to direct the infant's focus toward the monitor. It captures attention and prepares the infant to view the test stimulus. Using an attention-getter ensures infants are looking at the screen when the shape stimulus appears, making looking time measurements valid and reliable.

Question 6

How do researchers study habituation in infants using auditory stimuli?

Accepted Answer

Researchers measure habituation to sounds using specially designed pacifiers that gauge sucking rate and strength. Attentive infants suck more frequently and forcefully than habituated infants. This method allows researchers to examine auditory perception and learning without relying on visual attention, extending habituation paradigms to different sensory modalities.

Question 7

What does perceptual narrowing reveal about infant racial face recognition?

Accepted Answer

Perceptual narrowing occurs between 6 and 9 months of age, making infants better at recognizing faces from their own racial group while losing the ability to discriminate between faces of other racial groups. This developmental change shows how early experience shapes perception. At 3 months, infants recognize faces independent of race, but narrowing reflects adaptation to their social environment.
