Assessing Body Temperature - Tympanic membrane

Hand hygiene prevents the spread of microorganisms to the patient and reduces cross-infection risk. Performing hand hygiene at the beginning and end of the procedure protects both the patient and healthcare provider, ensuring safe and hygienic temperature assessment throughout the vital signs evaluation.

Instruct the patient to tilt their head to the side for comfort. For adults, gently pull the pinna up and back to straighten the ear canal, then insert the probe angling it toward the patient's jawline. This positioning provides maximum exposure of the tympanic membrane and ensures proper probe placement for accurate readings.

Observe the ear canal for cerumen accumulation, which can obstruct the probe's lens cover and affect measurement accuracy. If cerumen is present, consider switching to the opposite ear. Always ensure the probe cover is in place to prevent cross-contamination before insertion.

The beep sound signals that the temperature measurement is complete. After pressing the scan button and maintaining the probe in position, the audible beep indicates the thermometer has finished reading, and the patient's temperature will appear on the display unit.

A proper seal prevents ambient temperature from impacting the readings, ensuring accurate measurement. Carefully insert the probe into the external ear canal to achieve a perfect seal, which allows the thermometer to detect only the patient's tympanic membrane temperature without external environmental interference.

Remove the probe cover and discard it properly to prevent cross-contamination. Assist the patient to a comfortable position, replace the equipment in its charging unit, perform hand hygiene again, and document the findings in the patient's record to ensure accurate record-keeping and continuity of care.

Turn on the thermometer after removing it from the charging unit and before sliding in the probe cover. Wait until the ready sign appears on the screen to ensure accurate measurement. This preparation step guarantees the device is functioning properly before patient assessment begins.
