The olfactory organ is situated on the roof of the nasal cavity. It covers the superior nasal concha on each side of the nasal septum.
It consists of the connective tissue called lamina propria and the olfactory epithelium, a five square centimeters area rich in olfactory sensory neurons.
Each olfactory neuron is a bipolar neuron. Their apical dendrites continue into a bulb and form several radiating nonmotile olfactory cilia that contain receptor proteins.
The olfactory neurons are interspersed by columnar supporting cells and olfactory glands, which produce mucus around the olfactory cilia.
The mucus helps capture and dissolve the airborne odorants allowing efficient detection by the receptor proteins.
In addition, the olfactory epithelium also contains olfactory stem cells at the base. They differentiate every 30-60 days to replace the old olfactory neurons.
