Q1: What is the epididymis and what are its main functions?
The epididymis is a comma-shaped organ approximately 4 cm long located on the posterior border of each testis. It contains a tightly coiled ductus epididymis about 7 meters long when uncoiled, divided into head, body, and tail. The epididymis matures sperm, recycles damaged sperm, and absorbs fluid produced by the seminiferous tubules.
Q2: How does the vas deferens contribute to sperm transport?
The vas deferens, or ductus deferens, is a 45 cm long tube that passes through the inguinal canal and curves along the lateral surface of the urinary bladder. It stores and transports sperm from the epididymis tail, which straightens and increases in diameter to form this duct, facilitating movement toward the ejaculatory duct.
Q3: What happens when the vas deferens joins the seminal vesicle duct?
When the vas deferens merges with the duct from the seminal vesicles, they form the ejaculatory duct, a short 2 cm long tube.
