This study investigates the role of cellulose in bacterial adhesion to plant roots. Using tomato seedlings, the research compares the adhesion of bacteria from a wild-type strain and a cellulose-deficient mutant.
Quantitative assessment of bacterial colonization on plant roots enables mechanistic de-risking in plant-microbe interaction studies, supporting early discovery and target validation for agricultural biotechnology portfolios. Measuring viable cell counts of wild-type versus cellulose-deficient strains clarifies the functional role of bacterial adhesion factors, informing predictive confidence in candidate selection and intervention strategies. This approach strengthens translational continuity from discovery biology to applied crop protection research.
This viable cell count method integrates into the discovery-to-preclinical continuum for plant-microbe interaction studies, supporting both target validation and screening inflection points.
