This article describes a method to induce colitis in a murine model using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). The process involves monitoring the mouse for signs of gastrointestinal disorders and performing surgical isolation of the colon for further analysis.
The dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced murine colitis model provides a reproducible system for interrogating gut barrier disruption and immune-mediated inflammation relevant to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) drug discovery. This model enables early-stage target validation and mechanistic de-risking by recapitulating key features of human colitis in a controlled preclinical setting. Its standardized workflow supports translational continuity from discovery biology through preclinical assessment of candidate interventions.
This DSS-induced colitis model is positioned at the interface of early discovery and preclinical research, enabling hypothesis testing, target validation, and candidate evaluation within the IBD therapeutic pipeline.
