This study investigates the use of Mycobacterium bovis BCG to induce granuloma formation in mice and the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to visualize the inflammatory response. The research focuses on the interaction between superparamagnetic nanoprobes and the granuloma to enhance imaging contrast.
This technique enables non-invasive detection of extrapulmonary tuberculosis through targeted nanoprobe-enhanced MRI, offering a preclinical model for evaluating anti-tubercular therapeutics. By visualizing granuloma formation and response in vivo, it supports mechanistic de-risking of host-directed therapies and improves predictive confidence in target validation for tuberculosis drug discovery programs.
The method fits within the discovery continuum from target validation through lead optimization to preclinical efficacy testing, providing imaging-based biomarkers that support decision-making at each stage.
