Artmaking Sessions

Artmaking sessions are structured periods in which people create visual or material artworks, providing a setting for expression, observation, and interaction. Participants engage with tools and materials through activities such as drawing, painting, collage, or modeling, while facilitators may document attention, persistence, choice-making, communication, and social behavior. In behavior research and practice, these sessions can help examine how environmental conditions, instructions, feedback, and social context influence participation and observable responses. They also provide a flexible context for supporting communication and assessing behavioral change, particularly when verbal reporting is limited or when researchers seek to connect creative activity with learning and engagement.

The goal of the protocol is to guide researchers in conducting experiments that are intended to measure changes in self-reported emotional response and heart rate variability following art making with different materials. The protocol can easily be adapted for use in a variety of behavioral conditions and activities.

Short session (≤10 min) high intensity interval training (HIIT) is emerging as an alternative to longer exercise modalities, yet the shorter variants are rarely modeled in animal studies. Here, we describe a 10 min, 3 day a week, uphill treadmill HIIT protocol that enhances physical performance in male and female aged mice.

Source: Batra, V., et al. A General Method for Evaluating Deep Brain Stimulation Effects on Intravenous Methamphetamine Self-Administration. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates a rat model of drug addiction in which the animal self-administers intravenous methamphetamine by pressing a lever, leading to compulsive drug-seeking behavior driven by dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens. To counteract this, the rat undergoes deep brain stimulation (DBS) via an implanted bipolar...
