Brain Activity Comparison

Brain activity comparison is the systematic analysis of how neural signals differ across people, behaviors, tasks, or experimental conditions. Researchers measure activity with methods such as electroencephalography, which records changes in electrical potentials, or functional magnetic resonance imaging, which detects activity-related changes in blood oxygenation, then compare patterns using aligned behavioral and statistical measures. This approach helps link brain dynamics with attention, learning, emotion, decision-making, and motor performance. By identifying shared and distinct neural signatures, brain activity comparison supports research on behavior, cognitive function, neurological disorders, and the effects of interventions.

Quantitative Comparison of cis-Regulatory Element (CRE) Activities in Transgenic Drosophila melanogaster

Phenotypic variation for traits can result from mutations in cis-regulatory element (CRE) sequences that control gene expression patterns. Methods derived for use in Drosophila melanogaster can quantitatively compare the levels of spatial and temporal patterns of gene expression mediated by modified or naturally occurring CRE variants.

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

An infinite series composed of positive terms may either approach a finite value or increase without bound. Determining which outcome occurs is a central task in calculus, and comparison tests provide structured methods for making this determination. Rather than evaluating a series directly, these tests relate it to another series whose behavior is already known, allowing conclusions to be drawn through logical comparison. The direct comparison test applies to series with positive terms. If each...

In Vivo Electrophysiological Recordings of Brain Activities from Multiple Sites in Rats

This video demonstrates the detailed procedure for preparing an anesthetized rat for electrophysiological recordings of brain activity from multiple sites. The scalp is dissected to access the skull, and holes are drilled at precise locations to install and secure electrodes. Tungsten microwire electrodes are then inserted into the targeted location to record the data.

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Recording Brain Activity During Social Interactions

Source: Reindl, V., et al. Conducting Hyperscanning Experiments with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. J. Vis. Exp. (2019) This video demonstrates the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure brain activity during social interactions. Participants engage in a coordinated task that increases activity in the prefrontal cortex, a region critical for social behavior, while the system detects changes in light absorption due to blood oxygenation. By analyzing the synchrony...
