Chinese Relative Clause

Chinese relative clauses are subordinate clauses that modify a noun, providing information about its role or properties within an event or situation. Unlike English, Chinese typically places the relative clause before the head noun and uses the particle 的 to connect the clause to the noun, while the relativized position remains unspoken. This structure creates distinct processing demands for subject and object relatives because readers must track word order, grammatical roles, and the missing constituent. Studying Chinese relative clauses helps researchers examine sentence comprehension, language acquisition, cross-linguistic variation, and how syntactic structure influences human linguistic behavior.
