Deeplabcut Pose Estimation

DeepLabCut pose estimation is a markerless computer-vision technique that quantifies animal or human behavior by tracking body-part positions in video. It uses deep neural networks trained on user-labeled video frames to detect anatomical keypoints, then applies the learned visual features to estimate those points across new frames without physical markers. The resulting trajectories can reveal posture, movement, coordination, and social interactions, supporting behavioral phenotyping, neuroscience, biomechanics, and animal welfare research. By converting complex video recordings into reproducible numerical data, DeepLabCut helps researchers measure behavior at greater scale and with less manual annotation.

Utilizing vmTracking to Improve the Accuracy of Multi-Animal Pose Estimation in Rodent Social Behavior Studies

2025

This protocol introduces vmTracking, a method that enables high-accuracy pose tracking in videos of multiple freely moving, markerless animals, even under crowded conditions where animals are densely grouped. This approach provides reliable data for analyzing social interactions that occur in semi-natural environments where animals can move freely.

What are Estimates?

2023

It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates. The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such as the mean,...

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

Estimation of k and VD of Aminoglycosides

2025

Aminoglycosides are a class of antibiotics used to treat various bacterial infections. Clinicians must determine the elimination rate constant (k) and volume of distribution (VD) to optimize therapeutic efficacy and minimize toxicity. The k value represents the rate at which the drug is removed from the body, and the VD reflects the degree to which the drug distributes into body tissues. Accurately estimating these parameters allows healthcare professionals to tailor drug dosing to individual...

This protocol describes how to build a small and versatile video camera, and how to use videos obtained from it to train a neural network to track the position of an animal inside operant conditioning chambers. This is a valuable complement to standard analyses of data logs obtained from operant conditioning tests.
