Hyperglycemic Zebrafish Model

A hyperglycemic zebrafish model is an experimental system in which zebrafish experience elevated blood glucose to study the biological and behavioral consequences of impaired glucose regulation. Increased glucose availability can disturb metabolic and neuronal homeostasis, producing measurable changes in locomotion, activity patterns, social interaction, or responses to environmental stimuli. Because zebrafish are small, genetically tractable, and amenable to standardized behavioral assays, this model supports efficient investigation of diabetes-associated behavior and underlying physiology. It can help researchers compare behavioral phenotypes, evaluate candidate interventions, and connect altered glucose metabolism with nervous system function.

Metabolic memory is the phenomenon by which diabetic complications persist and progress unimpeded even after euglycemia is achieved pharmaceutically. Here we describe a diabetes mellitus zebrafish model which is unique in that it allows for the examination of the mitotically transmissible epigenetic components of metabolic memory in vivo.

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State

2026

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State, or HHS, is a serious and life-threatening complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is characterized by three main features: severe hyperglycemia, profound dehydration, and elevated serum osmolality, all occurring without significant ketoacidosis.HHS typically develops in older adults or individuals with limited access to fluids. This may result from illness, cognitive impairment, or medications such as diuretics or corticosteroids. These factors reduce...

Nephrotoxin Microinjection in Zebrafish to Model Acute Kidney Injury

Renal injuries incurred from nephrotoxins, which include drugs ranging from antibiotics to chemotherapeutics, can result in complex disorders whose pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. This protocol demonstrates how zebrafish can be used for disease modeling of these conditions, which can be applied to the identification of renoprotective measures.

Acute and Chronic Models of Hyperglycemia in Zebrafish: A Method to Assess the Impact of Hyperglycemia on Neurogenesis and the Biodistribution of Radiolabeled Molecules

This work describes methods to establish acute and chronic hyperglycemia models in zebrafish. The aim is to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia on physiological processes, such as constitutive and injury-induced neurogenesis. The work also highlights the use of zebrafish to follow radiolabeled molecules (here, [18F]-FDG) using PET/CT.

Zebrafish as an Alternative Vertebrate Model Organism in Biomedical Research

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are widely used as an alternative vertebrate model organism in biomedical research. Their genetic similarity to humans, rapid development, and suitability for large-scale studies make them valuable tools...
