Courtship Arenas

Courtship arenas are locations where animals gather to perform mating displays, compete for access to mates, and influence reproductive choice. Within these sites, individuals use visual signals, vocalizations, movements, or physical contests to advertise condition, establish social rank, and attract partners, while observers compare potential mates and select among them. Studying courtship arenas helps behavioral scientists examine sexual selection, communication, competition, and mate choice in natural populations. These systems also reveal how environmental conditions, spatial organization, and social interactions shape reproductive behavior and the evolution of distinctive traits.

Drosophila Courtship Conditioning: A Method to Test Learning and Memory In Flies

2023

This video describes a classical conditioning assay that tests learning and memory in Drosophila, called courtship conditioning. The assay is based on the reduction of male courtship after experiencing a rejection by a non-receptive premated female. The example protocol shows a setup for the procedure that can be used to assess short- and long-term memory.

This protocol describes a Drosophila learning and memory assay called courtship conditioning. This classic assay is based on a reduction of male courtship behavior after sexual rejection by a non-receptive premated female. This natural form of behavioral plasticity can be used to test learning, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
