Late Positive Component

The Late Positive Component is a positive-going event-related potential (ERP) observed in scalp-recorded EEG several hundred milliseconds after a stimulus, providing a noninvasive index of brain activity during cognitive and behavioral processing. It arises from synchronized neural responses to task-relevant or motivationally significant events, with its amplitude and latency influenced by attention, stimulus probability, evaluation, and memory demands. Researchers use the Late Positive Component to study how people detect, interpret, and remember information, as well as how emotional or salient stimuli shape behavior. Its timing and magnitude can help distinguish stages of stimulus evaluation and reveal changes in cognitive processing across tasks, populations, or clinical conditions.

2012

Measuring left ventricular pressure (LV) in embryonic and neonatal mice is described. Pressure is measured by inserting a needle connected to a fluid-filled transducer into the LV under ultrasound guidance. Care must be taken to maintain normal cardiac function during the experimental protocol.

This video demonstrates the preparation of primary neuronal cultures from the brains of late stage Drosophila pupae. Views of live cultures show neurite outgrowth and imaging of calcium levels using Fura-2.

Major Components of the Light Microscope

The light microscope is a basic tool for the cell biologist, who should have a thorough understanding of how it works, how it should be aligned for different applications, and how it should be maintained as required to obtain maximum image-forming capacity and resolution. The components of the microscope are described in detail here.

The Utility of Stage-specific Mid-to-late Drosophila Follicle Isolation

Stage-specific isolation of mid-to-late Drosophila follicles is useful for a variety of purposes. Such follicles develop in culture, which allows for genetic and/or pharmacologic manipulations to be coupled with in vitro development assays and live imaging. Additionally, follicles can be used for molecular studies, such as isolating mRNA and protein.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...
