Minimum Norm Estimate

A minimum norm estimate is a mathematical solution that satisfies available constraints while minimizing the norm, usually the Euclidean length, of the estimated parameter vector. For an underdetermined linear system, it uses the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse to select the least-magnitude solution among multiple exact or least-squares estimates, often favoring simpler parameter values. In behavioral science, this approach can estimate model parameters from incomplete or ambiguous observations while reducing unnecessary complexity. It supports interpretable analyses of response patterns, decision-making, and other behavior-related data, particularly when measurements outnumber independent constraints or when several parameter combinations explain the same outcome.

A Minority of One: Conformity to Group Norms

Source: William Brady & Jay Van Bavel—New York University It is obvious that we are influenced by those around us, but in the early to mid 1900's, psychologists began to study how potent social influence can be on our thoughts and behaviors. Motivated in part by attempts to explain the behaviors of Nazi soldiers in World War II, one topic of considerable interest at the time in psychology was conformity, the phenomenon in which people match their attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs to group...

The protocol presented herein seeks to evaluate the depth of anesthesia utilizing Dixon's Up-and-Down Design in sedated rats subjected to a standardized pain stimulus. Furthermore, it delineates a classification of the various movement patterns observed.

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

Local Maximum and Minimum Values

In multivariable calculus, a function of two variables can exhibit local maximum or minimum values at certain points on its surface. A local maximum occurs when the function's value at a point is greater than at all nearby points, while a local minimum occurs when the function’s value is less than at all nearby locations. These points are referred to as local extrema and are of central importance in optimization problems.Local extrema are found at critical points, where the surface becomes...
