Oral Catheter Implantation

Oral catheter implantation is a surgical technique that places a catheter in an animal’s oral cavity to provide controlled access for delivering substances during behavioral studies. After implantation, the catheter is secured and connected to an external infusion system, allowing researchers to administer defined volumes at programmed times while the animal performs a task or responds to stimuli. This approach supports experiments on taste, ingestion, reward, reinforcement, and drug-seeking behavior by linking precisely timed oral exposure with measurable behavioral responses. It can also reduce repeated handling, improving consistency across trials and enabling longitudinal studies of learning, motivation, and substance-related behaviors.
