Perceived Stress Questionnaire

The Perceived Stress Questionnaire is a self-report instrument that measures how stressful individuals perceive their circumstances, making it useful for studying stress-related behavior and well-being. Respondents rate experiences such as unpredictability, lack of control, tension, and overload over a defined period, and researchers combine responses into an overall perceived-stress score according to the questionnaire’s scoring procedure. Unlike measures based solely on external events or physiological markers, it captures an individual’s appraisal of stress, which can vary across people facing similar conditions. Researchers use it to examine behavioral, psychological, and health-related outcomes, evaluate interventions, and compare stress patterns across populations.

Perceiving Loudness, Pitch, and Location

2024

The human brain perceives pitch through two primary mechanisms reflected in place theory and frequency theory. Each mechanism describes how sound waves are interpreted as specific pitches by the brain, offering insights into the intricate processes of auditory perception. Place theory, or place coding, suggests that different pitches are heard because various sound waves activate specific locations along the cochlea's basilar membrane. The brain determines the pitch of a sound by identifying...

Perceiving Language Sounds and Structure During Infancy

Infants are born with a predisposition to perceive and categorize basic linguistic sounds. Early in development, they can discriminate sounds from many languages and detect differences in rhythm and pattern. This sensitivity may begin before birth. Newborns exposed to two languages prenatally can recognize both, indicating that fetal language exposure influences later auditory discrimination.Recognition of Familiar SoundsBy five months, infants show preferences for familiar auditory stimuli,...

Here, we present a protocol that provoked cortisol reactivity in a vulnerable adolescent Mexican American sample utilizing a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Saliva samples were collected at baseline, 15, 30, and 45 min post-TSST onset. Future research could utilize this modified TSST with vulnerable youth.

Modeling Social Stress

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...
