Drug Withdrawal

Drug withdrawal is the set of physical, emotional, and behavioral responses that can occur when repeated exposure to a psychoactive substance is reduced or stopped, making it important for understanding dependence and recovery. It arises as the brain and body adapt to a drug’s effects; when the substance is removed, altered neurotransmitter activity and stress-system regulation can produce symptoms such as craving, irritability, sleep disruption, or changes in motor behavior. In behavioral research, withdrawal measures help characterize dependence, compare drug effects, and evaluate potential treatments. Controlled observation of withdrawal-related behavior also supports studies of relapse risk and the neural mechanisms underlying substance use disorders.
