Seating Comfort

Seating comfort is the physical and subjective experience of support, ease, and reduced discomfort while sitting, making it an important factor in behavior and human-environment interactions. It emerges from how seat dimensions, cushioning, posture, pressure distribution, and body movement interact over time, with discomfort often prompting repositioning, fidgeting, or changes in sitting duration. Studying seating comfort helps researchers assess how furniture design influences attention, task persistence, participation, and well-being in settings such as classrooms, workplaces, vehicles, and public spaces. Behavioral measurements and user feedback can guide ergonomic improvements that support sustained activity without restricting natural movement.

2019

A sitting platform has been developed and assembled that passively destabilizes sitting posture in humans. During the user's stabilizing task, an inertial measurement unit records the device's motion, and vibrating elements deliver performance-based feedback to the seat. The portable, versatile device may be used in rehabilitation, assessment, and training paradigms.

Source: Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu1,2, Jaideep Talwalkar1; 1Yale School of Medicine, 2University of Pittsburgh In addition to the regular checks of a physical exam, examinations for patients who use wheelchairs should be adapted to address their specific needs. This ensures that the patient's mobility, injury risk, and quality of life are not threatened by extended periods of sitting, potentially without proper weight shifts. Such examination needs healthcare providers that understand these...

Phosphenes are transient percepts of light that can be induced by applying Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to visually sensitive regions of cortex. We demonstrate a standard protocol for determining the phosphene threshold value and introduce a novel method for quantifying and analyzing perceived phosphenes.
