Structural Localizer Scan

A structural localizer scan is an anatomical imaging procedure used to identify and map brain structures, providing an individual-specific reference for behavioral and neuroscience research. Typically acquired with high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging, it captures differences in tissue properties that distinguish gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid, allowing researchers to register functional or behavioral data to precise anatomical locations. Structural localizers support region-of-interest definition, participant-specific brain mapping, and interpretation of neural activity associated with perception, learning, decision-making, and other behaviors. They also improve spatial accuracy when comparing findings across participants or integrating structural and functional measurements.

This method aims at locating vertical subsurface defects. Here, we couple a laser with a spatial light modulator and trigger its video input to heat a sample surface deterministically with two anti-phased modulated lines while acquiring highly resolved thermal images. The defect position is retrieved from evaluating thermal wave interference minima.

Local Anesthetics: Chemistry and Structure-Activity Relationship

2025

Local anesthetics (LAs) are drugs that induce a temporary loss of sensation in a limited body area, preventing pain. Cocaine was the first local anesthetic discovered in the late 19th century. Cocaine is a benzoic acid ester obtained from the leaves of coca shrubs and was often used for its psychotropic effects. Cocaine was first isolated in 1860 by Albert Niemann. Sigmund Freud studied the physiological actions of cocaine. Carl Koller later introduced it into clinical practice in 1884 as a...

We demonstrate the use of fluorescence photo activation localization microscopy (FPALM) to simultaneously image multiple types of fluorescently labeled molecules within cells. The techniques described yield the localization of thousands to hundreds of thousands of individual fluorescent labeled proteins, with a precision of tens of nanometers within single cells.
