Volatile Metabolite Profiling

Volatile metabolite profiling is the systematic measurement of small, readily vaporized molecules produced by biochemical reactions, providing a chemical view of metabolism in biological samples. In practice, volatile compounds are collected from a sample’s headspace or extracted, separated by gas chromatography, and identified and quantified through mass spectrometry or related detectors; retention behavior and spectral patterns support compound assignment. In biochemistry, these profiles can reveal pathway activity, metabolic responses, and biochemical differences between healthy and perturbed states. The approach supports studies of microbial metabolism, disease-associated signatures, environmental responses, and quality assessment, while quantitative validation helps distinguish meaningful biomarkers from changes caused by sampling or storage.

A rapid method for volatile compound analysis in fruit is described. The volatile compounds present in the headspace of a homogenate of the sample are rapidly separated and detected with ultra-fast gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor. A procedure for data handling and analysis is also discussed.

Volatilization

2024

Volatilization gravimetry is an analytical technique that measures the mass lost due to the volatilization of the substance. This technique is used to estimate the amount of volatile material in a sample. To perform this method, heat a known amount of the sample to a high temperature in a crucible or other suitable vessel. The volatile substance in the sample evaporates, and the vapor is completely expelled from the crucible either by heating the sample or bubbling a stream of inert gas through...

Herbivore-induced Blueberry Volatiles and Intra-plant Signaling

A push-pull method for collecting plant volatiles is described. The method allows for a comparison of volatiles induced by herbivore feeding, exogenous methyl jasmonate, and mechanical damage. This technique is also used to investigate the volatile response of undamaged branches to exposure to volatiles from herbivore-damaged branches within blueberry plants.
