Calcium Propagation

Calcium propagation is the spatial and temporal spread of intracellular calcium signals through cells or across connected tissues, enabling coordinated biological responses. It occurs when calcium enters through membrane channels or is released from intracellular stores, such as the endoplasmic reticulum, and then diffuses or triggers further release through calcium-induced calcium release and related feedback mechanisms. In bioengineering, researchers use calcium propagation to study cell communication, excitation, contraction, and mechanotransduction in engineered tissues and organ-on-a-chip systems. Quantifying propagation speed, amplitude, and spatial range can reveal how signaling networks function and support the design of biosensors, therapeutic tissues, and biomimetic materials.

Intercellular Ca2+-waves are driven by gap junction channels and hemichannels. Here, we describe a method to measure intercellular Ca2+-waves in cell monolayers in response to a local single-cell mechanical stimulus and its application to investigate the properties and regulation of gap junction channels and hemichannels.

Calcium Imaging in Neurons

Calcium ions play an integral role in neuron function: They act as intracellular signals that can elicit responses such as altered gene expression and neurotransmitter release from synaptic vesicles. Within the cell, calcium concentration is highly dynamic due to the presence of pumps that selectively transport these ions in response to a variety of signals. Calcium imaging takes advantage of intracellular calcium flux to directly visualize calcium signaling in living neurons. This video begins...

Propagation of Waves

When a wave propagates from one medium to another, part of it may get reflected in the first medium, and part of it may get transmitted to the second medium. In such a case, the interface of the two mediums can be considered as a boundary that is neither fixed nor free. Consider a scenario where a wave propagates from a string of low linear mass density to a string of high linear mass density. In such a case, the reflected wave is out of phase with respect to the incident wave, however the...
