Chitosan Patch

A chitosan patch is a thin biomaterial dressing or delivery platform made from chitosan, a biodegradable polysaccharide derived from chitin, and is important for wound care and tissue engineering. When hydrated, the patch forms a flexible film or gel, while chitosan’s positively charged amino groups interact with negatively charged cell membranes, extracellular components, and blood constituents to support adhesion and localized activity. In bioengineering, chitosan patches can protect injured tissue, promote hemostasis, and deliver drugs or biological factors directly to a target site. Their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and tunable structure make them useful for regenerative medicine and controlled-release applications.

Sutures are usually needed to repair tissue during surgical procedures. However, their application can be problematic as they are invasive and may damage tissue. The fabrication and application methods of a novel tissue adhesive are here reported. This adhesive film is laser-activated and does not require the use of sutures.

Patch Clamp Electrophysiology

2023

Neuron cell membranes are populated with ion channels that control the movement of charge into and out of the cell, thereby regulating neuron firing. One extremely useful technique for investigating the biophysical properties of these channels is called patch clamp recording. In this method, neuroscientists place a polished glass micropipette against a cell and apply suction to form a high resistance seal. This process isolates a small “patch” of membrane that contains one or more ion channels.
