Optical Oxygen Sensor

An optical oxygen sensor is a device that measures oxygen concentration or partial pressure by monitoring how oxygen alters the light emitted by an indicator material. Typically, an oxygen-sensitive fluorescent or phosphorescent dye is excited with light, and oxygen quenches its emission; changes in intensity, lifetime, or phase shift are then related to oxygen levels through calibration. In bioengineering, these sensors enable noninvasive, spatially resolved monitoring of dissolved oxygen in cell cultures, tissue-engineered constructs, microfluidic systems, and bioreactors. Their small size and compatibility with imaging support real-time control of oxygen-dependent processes, improving studies of cellular metabolism, tissue viability, and bioprocess performance.

We demonstrate use of a fiber optic distributed sensor for mapping the temperature field of mixing air jets. The Rayleigh scattering-based sensor generates thousands of data points along a single fiber to provide exceptional spatial resolution that is unattainable with traditional sensors such as thermocouples.

Take a mouse subjected to laser-induced damage to the optic nerve head in the eye.The damage causes endothelial cell injury and blood clot formation in the blood vessels supplying the nerve, reducing blood flow and causing ischemia.Ischemia deprives the retinal ganglion cell axons in the optic nerve head of oxygen. In the RGC cell bodies, this disruption impairs mitochondrial function and increases reactive oxygen species production. The resulting oxidative stress activates apoptotic signaling...

A high-sensitivity photonic micro sensor was developed for electric field detection. The sensor exploits the optical modes of a dielectric sphere. Changes in the external electric field perturb the sphere morphology leading to shifts in its optical modes. The electric field strength is measured by monitoring these optical shifts.

We present an experimental procedure for measuring the partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in cerebral vasculature based on oxygen-dependent quenching of phosphorescence. Animal preparation and imaging procedures were outlined for both large field of view CCD-based imaging of pO2 in rats and 2-photon excitation based imaging of pO2 in mice.

Glovebox and Impurity Sensors

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University The glovebox provides a straightforward means to handle air- and moisture-sensitive solids and liquids. The glovebox is what it sounds like: a box with gloves attached to one or more sides, which allows the user to perform manipulations within the glovebox under an inert atmosphere. For manipulations under inert atmospheres, chemists can choose between Schlenk or high-vacuum techniques and a glovebox. Schlenk and...
