Stretch Shortening Cycles

Stretch-shortening cycles are movement patterns in which a muscle-tendon unit undergoes a rapid stretch immediately followed by shortening, a principle that helps generate efficient force and power. During the stretch phase, active muscle tension and elastic tissues such as tendons store mechanical energy; a short transition then enables its release during contraction, while neural reflexes can increase muscle activation. In bioengineering, analyzing these cycles informs the design of prosthetic limbs, wearable exoskeletons, and robotic actuators that reproduce human movement. The concept also supports biomechanical assessment, rehabilitation strategies, and models of locomotion, jumping, and other dynamic actions.
