Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound therapy uses high-frequency sound waves to produce therapeutic effects in biological tissues, making it an important noninvasive modality in bioengineering and clinical care. A transducer converts electrical energy into acoustic waves that propagate through tissue, where absorption can generate localized heating and pressure variations can produce mechanical effects such as acoustic streaming and cavitation. These interactions can support rehabilitation, tissue healing, targeted drug delivery, and focused ultrasound procedures that treat abnormal tissue with limited damage to surrounding areas. Bioengineers optimize frequency, intensity, exposure time, and transducer design to control treatment depth, energy distribution, and safety.

Begin with an anesthetized tumor-bearing mouse and shave its head.Place it in an MRI scanner integrated with the focused ultrasound system. The initial MRI scan locates the brain tumor and nearby blood vessels.Inject a contrast agent intravenously, then administer fluorescently labeled nanoparticles coated onto gas-filled microbubbles. The contrast agent and microbubbles circulate and reach the brain.Apply focused ultrasound waves to the tumor site. The ultrasound causes the microbubbles to expand...

Diagnostic ultrasound imaging has proven to be effective in diagnosing various respiratory diseases in human and animal subjects. We demonstrate a comprehensive ultrasound protocol utilized by Dr. Zuo's lab to analyze diaphragm kinetics specifically in mouse models. This is also a non-invasive research technique which can provide quantitative information on mouse respiratory muscle function.

Glaucoma is a chronic disease with progressive degeneration of optic nerve fibers resulting in decreased visual field. Elevated intraocular pressure is considered the most important and the only treatable risk factor. This manuscript describes a simple, surgeon-friendly, non-incisional technique, named Ultrasound Cyclo Plasty, for reducing intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

(2023)This video demonstrates a protocol for performing sonodynamic therapy on a brain tumor in a mouse model using magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS). A sonosensitizer precursor is administered prior to treatment, which accumulates in tumor cells and is activated by focused ultrasound to produce reactive...
