Age Synchronized Population

An age-synchronized population is a group of organisms whose individuals are at the same or closely matched developmental age, enabling biological changes to be compared across equivalent life stages. Researchers create synchronization by coordinating reproduction, hatching, or collection of organisms within a defined time window and then maintaining them under consistent conditions. In biology, this approach reduces variation caused by age and supports accurate analysis of development, aging, gene expression, physiology, and responses to environmental or experimental treatments. Age synchronization is especially valuable when researchers need to distinguish effects of a treatment from normal, age-dependent changes in a population.

AC Synchronous Machine Synchronization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...

Measurement of Survival Time in Brachionus Rotifers: Synchronization of Maternal Conditions

Rotifers are microscopic zooplankton used as models in ecotoxicological and aging studies. Here we provide a protocol for powerful and reproducible measurement of survival time in Brachionus rotifers. Synchronization of culture conditions over several generations is of particular importance because maternal condition affects life history of offspring.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous motors are less popular than permanent magnet rotor synchronous motors due to the brushes required for the rotor field. Synchronous generators are much more common and available in most existing power plants, as they have excellent frequency and voltage regulation. Synchronous motors have the advantage of almost 0% speed regulation due to the fact that the rotor...

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...
