Aging Organism

An aging organism is a living system undergoing progressive, time-dependent changes that reduce physiological resilience and increase susceptibility to disease, making aging a central subject in biology. These changes arise from interacting processes, including the accumulation of cellular damage, declining DNA repair and protein maintenance, altered nutrient-sensing pathways, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the increasing presence of senescent cells. Studying aging organisms helps researchers connect molecular and cellular mechanisms with changes in tissues, behavior, and survival, while informing research on age-related diseases, lifespan, regenerative biology, and interventions designed to preserve health and function later in life.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...

Aging is a complex biological phenomenon influenced by various processes that affect cellular and systemic functions. Several prominent theories attempt to explain its mechanisms, highlighting cellular limitations, oxidative damage, and hormonal changes as central factors in aging. Cellular Clock Theory The cellular clock theory posits that the human lifespan is closely tied to the finite capacity of cells to divide, a phenomenon governed by telomeres, which are protective caps at the ends of...
