Baffled Flask Culture

Baffled flask culture is a laboratory method for growing microorganisms or other cells in a liquid medium inside a shaken flask fitted with internal ridges called baffles. During agitation, the baffles disrupt circular fluid movement, promote turbulence, and increase mixing, gas exchange, and oxygen transfer between the medium and the flask headspace. This approach supports more uniform nutrient distribution and can improve biomass production compared with conventional smooth-walled flasks. In biology, baffled flasks are useful for preparing microbial inocula, studying growth and metabolism, and generating cultures for downstream experiments, while agitation speed and culture conditions must be controlled to balance oxygen availability with shear stress.
