Blood Meal Preparation

Blood meal preparation is the controlled collection and conditioning of blood for laboratory studies of hematophagous organisms, especially mosquitoes and other disease vectors. Researchers preserve the blood in a usable state, maintain appropriate temperature, and deliver it through a membrane or artificial feeder so insects can feed under standardized conditions. This process supports investigations of blood feeding, digestion, egg development, vector competence, and pathogen transmission. Consistent preparation reduces variation between experiments, improves animal-free or controlled feeding systems, and helps researchers evaluate how host blood composition and feeding conditions influence insect physiology and disease ecology.

To facilitate the effort in seeking more economic and environment-friendly formulations of natural product-based wood adhesives, this work demonstrates the preparation and testing of plant seed-based wood adhesives. This protocol allows one to assess plant seed-based agricultural products as suitable candidates for the substitution of synthetic-based wood adhesives.

Meal Duration as a Measure of Orofacial Nociceptive Responses in Rodents

A lengthening in meal duration represents orofacial nociceptive behavior in rodents similar to the guarding behavior of humans with orofacial pain. Eating is a behavior that requires no training or animal manipulation, requires cortical participation, and is not competing with other experimentally induced behaviors, distinguishing this assay from alternative reflex or operant measurements.

A procedure for making en face preparations of the mouse carotid artery and aorta is described. Such preparations, when immunofluorescently stained with specific antibodies, enable us to study localization of proteins and identification of cell types within the entire vascular wall by confocal microscopy.

Improved Method for the Preparation of a Human Cell-based, Contact Model of the Blood-Brain Barrier

Establishment of human models of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) can benefit research into brain conditions associated with BBB failure. We describe here an improved technique for preparation of a contact BBB model, which permits coculturing of human astrocytes and brain endothelial cells on the opposite sides of a porous membrane.
