Brown Sugar Solution

Brown sugar solution is a water-based mixture of brown sugar, whose sucrose crystals retain molasses and therefore contain additional colored and flavor compounds; in biology, it can provide a soluble carbohydrate source. When dissolved, sucrose increases the solution’s osmolarity and can be hydrolyzed by enzymes such as invertase into glucose and fructose, which cells and microorganisms can metabolize. This makes brown sugar solution useful for supplying energy in microbial culture, supporting yeast fermentation, or preparing feeding mixtures for laboratory organisms when a readily available carbon source is needed. Its concentration must be controlled because excessive sugar can draw water from cells by osmosis and inhibit growth.

Phloem and Sugar Transport

Like many living organisms, plants have tissues that specialize in specific plant functions. For example, shoots are well adapted to rapid growth, while roots are structured to acquire resources efficiently. However, sugar production is primarily restricted to the photosynthetic tissues that reside in the leaves of angiosperm plants. Sugar and other resources are transported from photosynthetic cells to other specialized tissues by a process called translocation.Within a plant, tissues that...

A number of natural and synthetic materials exhibit selective permeation, meaning that only molecules or ions of a certain size, shape, polarity, charge, and so forth, are capable of passing through (permeating) the material. Biological cell membranes provide elegant examples of selective permeation in nature, while dialysis tubing used to remove metabolic wastes from blood is a more simplistic technological example. Regardless of how they may be fabricated, these materials are generally...
