Capacitation Conditions

Capacitation conditions are the physiological and laboratory factors that enable mammalian sperm to acquire the functional ability to fertilize an egg. In an environment containing bicarbonate, calcium ions, and cholesterol-accepting proteins such as albumin, sperm undergo membrane remodeling, increased cyclic AMP signaling, hyperactivated motility, and preparation for the acrosome reaction. These conditions normally develop in the female reproductive tract and can be reproduced in vitro using defined culture media. Controlling capacitation conditions helps researchers study sperm function, fertilization mechanisms, infertility, and assisted reproductive techniques, while providing a framework for evaluating how drugs, toxins, or environmental changes affect reproductive biology.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use commercial capacitors and a parallel plate capacitor to demonstrate the concept of capacitance. A capacitor stores opposite charges on two conductors, for example two opposite metal plates, leading to a potential difference (voltage drop) between the two conductors. The amount of charge on each conductor is proportional to this voltage drop, with...

Scanning-probe single-electron capacitance spectroscopy facilitates the study of single-electron motion in localized subsurface regions. A sensitive charge-detection circuit is incorporated into a cryogenic scanning probe microscope to investigate small systems of dopant atoms beneath the surface of semiconductor samples.

Capacitors and Capacitance

A device consisting of two electrical conductors that are separated by a distance and used to store electrical charges is called a capacitor. The space between the conductors is either a vacuum or an insulating material, called a dielectric. Capacitors have many applications, ranging from filtering static from radio reception to energy storage in heart defibrillators. When the conductors are two identical parallel plates, it is called a parallel plate capacitor. When battery terminals are...

Equivalent Capacitance

Multiple capacitors can be connected in a circuit in series or parallel configuration. When the capacitor combination is connected to a battery, the potential drop across each capacitor and the magnitude of charge stored in the individual capacitor depends on the type of the connection. The capacitor combination is replaced by a single equivalent capacitor that stores the same amount of charge as the combination for a given potential difference. The following strategies are adopted to calculate...
